OFFICE OF THE PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER: WESTERN CAPE26 August 2026*Police Captain dies in shootout between police and a suspect in Knysna*Cape Town: Western Cape police are reeling from shock following the killing of a police captain and a suspect in a shootout during an operation in Knysna in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The captain, aged 50 was attached to the provincial Tactical Response Team and deployed in the area as part of investigations into the murder of councillor and former mayor of Knysna, Aubrey Tsengwa as well as two others in separate shooting incidents last week. At the time of the captain’s death, the SAPS integrated team was executing an operation following up information about illegal firearms at Sewende Laan informal settlement on Uniondale Road. The suspect (38) also died in the shootout. Two firearms were found in his possession. Psychosocial support is currently provided to the SAPS team on the scene as well as colleagues of the captain in Cape Town.Three suspects appeared in court for Tsengwa’s murder with investigations ongoing into the murder of Mandla Matiwane and Mandla Tyololo. THREE ARRESTS FOR TSENGWA MURDERAs part of ongoing investigations into the murder of Knysna councillor and former mayor, Aubrey Tsengwa on the evening of Wednesday 19 August 2025, Western Cape Serious Violent Crime Unit detectives have arrested three suspects. They appeared at the Knysna Magistrate’s court today Monday 24 August.The Provincial Commissioner, Lt General SW Dyantyi, Deputy Provincial Commissioner Crime Detection, Major General Bongani Maqashalala and Garden Route District Commissioner, Major General Phumzile Cetyana attended the Knysna Magistrates' court where the accused faced charges of conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder.The accused aged 33, 36 and 45 were remanded in custody and the matter postponed to 31 August 2026 for a formal bail application. The men were apprehended on Saturday by the SVC detectives, along with members from Crime Intelligence, Knysna SAPS, the Combat Team and the Drone Unit. After being questioned and charged by police, two vehicles, three firearms and several cellular phones were seized as part of the investigation.The search for more suspects continues with investigators setting their sights on further arrests. UPDATE:- New verified developments :- Tragic news of the murder of Knysna's Ward 8 Councillor Aubrey Tsengwa, who was shot and killed late last night. He is the second councillor of that ward to lose his life under the same circumstances. Western Cape police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said the shooting occurred at about 21:20 on Wednesday, 19 August, in Ngxalo Street, Joodsekamp, Knysna. The provincial Serious and Violent Crime unit is investigating murder and three attempted-murder cases. Tsengwa suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene; one passenger was reportedly shot in the arm and taken to hospital. No arrests had been made, and the motive remained undetermined.
