Sedgefield has it's fair share of paper nautilus shells and encounters, and this seems to be the season to find them washed up on our expansive beaches, mostly intact and uninhabited.

Here's some footage and informed observations from Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town sharing a little more about these shy little creatures:

Two Oceans Aquarium
This is a paper nautilus, a.k.a. an argonaut, that was found trapped in the Cape Town harbour after a storm a while ago. After bringing it to the Two Oceans Aquarium for a day to check up on its health, Senior Aquarist Deen Hill returned it to a calmer, clearer area of Table Bay with better access to the open ocean. πŸ™

The paper nautilus is a type of octopus that drifts in the open ocean. It's "shell" is actually an egg case that the female secretes - although it looks like it is part of the animal, that's actually a mother protecting her eggs by hiding inside the egg case!

Like many species of octopus, the paper nautilus only survives one breeding cycle, so for this mother, getting her egg case back into the open ocean before she passes away is her main priority. The egg case contains a large air bubble, which will help the newly emerging babies to stay close to the surface where they can find food, like sea slugs and salps, even after their mother passes on.

One last bonus for those of you that read this far - although the paper nautilus' first line of defence is to hide inside the egg casing, they also have large ink sacks. Pay close attention to the end of this video, after Deen places it in the water - it leaves him with a parting poof of ink as it jets away!

We would like to thank everyone involved in getting the missing pink buoy back to us. We received a message on fb that it had been seen floating on the Sedgefield Lagoon and someone had picked it up.
We appreciate the vigilant eyes of the community and the speedy recovery of this life saving device.
Thank you πŸ‘πŸ‘
