Calling all locals! This week's edition of The EDGE is online - visit www.edgenews.co.za for early-bird reading pleasure! Printed copies (you have to love the great feeling of newsprint betwixt fingers) will be on the streets from lunchtime onwards. It's all plain sailing! Our front page features the Anything That Floats - thanks to Michael Hilton Photography for the wonderful pictures - and on page 3 we announce local sailor Georgou Divaris's epic win in the National Championships held at Pine Lake. Then there's an amazing story of a local 91-year-old cyclist who was (albeit briefly) unexpectedly airborne, the victorious Young Boys FC winning Knysna's Easter Cup, plus all the other news, views, WHOO HOO!s and PHEW!s that keep our community running.

MASITHANDANE'S 'ANYTHING THAT FLOATS' MAKES A SPLASH
This year's Anything That Floats, held on Saturday, 28 March on Fish Eagle Green, was once again a day of raucus fun, ingenuity, chaos, incredulity, water, sunburn, laughter, genius, failure, entertainment, idiocy, more water, prizes and a general lack of engineering ability. ![]()
A huge thank you to all the teams who took part: The two Sedgefield Scout teams - 'Loki' and 'Odin's Hammer', the Roos Family's 'Snow White', Forest Roots 'Green Machine', Sedgefield Lions' one-man entry 'The Otter', and the motley crew on the EDGE's craft - 'SS Mild Fury'. Every one of these teams certainly put 'All hands on deck' to ensure the crowds gathered on the shore to watch/laugh/point fingers/shake their heads in disbelief were not disappointed.![]()
This year there was, disapointingly, no absolute failures (yes - even the EDGE's craft stayed afloat) so the wonderful folk from NSRI who kept an eye on proceedings did not have to perform any serious rescues.![]()
When the brilliant MC Cornel Delafield began the prize-giving ceremony, the overall winners on the day were the never-say-die crew members of Odin, who snatched victory from the 'Snow White' team after one of the dwarves left his beard floating in the lagoon. This, according to the judges, broke the ATF's all-important 'Leave Nothing Behind' code of ethics, costing the seven little fellows and their team's namesake valuable points and pushing them back to second place.![]()
Numerous other prizes were awarded, so the over-achievers, under-performers, suspected mushroom embibers and suspiciously political campaigners in the other teams all went home with the sense that their floating craftmanship had been appreciated.![]()
A number of businesses and individuals came to the party to support this community event - huge appreciation to Brian Groom of Fish Eagle Financial Services and Andy Brough & family for the donation of R1000 each for the cash prize given to the overall winners, and to prize donors Pili Pili Sedgefield, Pick n Pay Sedgefield, Kraaibosch Shell, MacButners, Kahunas, Harry's, Stoned Oxygen Pty Ltd.![]()
Also thanks to the folk from Sedgefield Animal Matters, who were present and even paid the entry fee, despite not having a craft taking part.![]()
Thanks to the four judges (names withheld due to accusations of bribery and corruption currently under investigation), Mike Hofhuis and Brian Groom for capturing the antics with their cameras, Safety Officers Michael and Mike for ensuring we were absolutely safe from any pending disaster, and the amazing Masithandane Team who helped with applications, gathered prizes, manned the food stall and generally organised 'stuff'.![]()
See you all next year!

This week's edition of The EDGE Community Newspaper is up on www.edgenews.co.za - printed editions will be on the streets later today. We lead with the amazing story of six 'FURgitives' raising over R50k for Sedgefield Animal Sedgefield Animal Matters, plus there's Saturday's record-breaking Tortoise Tuff entries - which included a bride and groom getting married the same day. Then there's a reminder of this weekend's Anything That Floats, a deal from Knysna Municipality offering to HALVE peoples' outstanding accounts (if they sign up for a specific payment plan), an explanation of the much-talked-about Erf 5008 development, and all the other wonderful stuff that keeps Sedgefield ticking!
